The Heart of Nursing

Nursing is a distinguished profession because it lies at the heart of human life. However, from an outsider’s perspective, it may appear like any other job—one where people work to earn a living and fulfill personal ambitions. When I reflect on my journey so far, one truth remains: my role as a cardiac nurse is rooted in my heart rather than in material benefits. I say this with deep passion and a clear understanding of what it means to be a nurse. I have been privileged to work across different settings and interact with a wide range of people. The most profound pillar of my journey has been an inner drive to help, support, and protect. Even in the face of challenges, I have always found a way to give my best for the sake of my colleagues and patients.

One question that often arises is, “What makes a good nurse?” This question is subjective; however, I do not hesitate to respond with conviction. A good nurse does more than simply complete their responsibilities effectively. They go the extra mile to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their patients and colleagues. They dedicate their energy to working collaboratively for both individual and collective success. They understand the true value of teamwork and what it can achieve. They are passionate, kind, self-driven, and respectful. They use their skills to adapt to different situations without losing sight of the needs, preferences, and well-being of their patients and the broader community.

So, as a nurse, what comes next? What should you do to succeed and leave a lasting impact? There is no single, correct answer to this question. However, I believe the answer lies within each of us. As you sit at home or move from one patient to another, take a moment to reflect on your nursing journey. Ask yourself why you chose nursing, what you have achieved, and what you can do better moving forward. Have you stayed true to your purpose? What opportunities exist for growth?

Finally, after reflecting on these questions, consider the opportunities around you—including the support of colleagues and friends. You do not need to change who you are, but you can always realign your skills, knowledge, and passion to grow. Most importantly, collaborate with others and continue learning.
