Why is it important for people experiencing cancer to exercise regularly?
Exercise is an important component of maintaining health during and after cancer treatment. Even if it was not a regular part of your lifestyle before your cancer diagnosis, a well-planned exercise program can have a positive impact on your life now.
Some benefits of regular exercise for people with cancer include:
- Reducing treatment-related fatigue, anxiety, and depression.
- Maintaining strength to help prevent muscle loss.
- Improving sleep quality and balance.
- Supporting weight management and promoting healthy weight loss, when appropriate.
What should an exercise program include?
Cancer treatments, such as radiation and surgery, can cause weakness and muscular imbalances. A well-rounded exercise program can help strengthen your body, improve your quality of life, and increase your independence.
- Stretching exercises improve flexibility and posture while promoting blood flow and oxygen delivery to your muscles.
- Balance exercises help restore function and mobility, making it easier to return safely to daily activities.
- Aerobic (cardio) exercises strengthen your heart and lungs while improving endurance.
- Strength or resistance training builds muscle and makes everyday activities easier and less tiring.
I teach a weekly class through Integrative Medicine at Home called Mobility, Aerobics, and Strength Training. It is a chair-based class that incorporates the fundamental components of mobility, flexibility, aerobics, strength training, and coordination exercises—all while creating a fun and supportive environment.
What are some tips for getting started or returning to a regular exercise routine?
First and foremost, it is important to talk with your doctor and healthcare team before starting any new exercise program.
- Start slowly. Remember that every step counts. Gradually increase your activity level in manageable increments. For example, begin with a brisk 10- to 15-minute walk once or twice a week, then increase the frequency and duration as you feel comfortable.
- Exercise in a safe environment. Make sure the area is well ventilated, and always have access to plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Consider exercising with others. Joining a group can provide a sense of community, encouragement, and connection. Exercising alongside others who share similar goals can also help you feel more comfortable and motivated.
Returning to exercise after treatment or surgery is not a fast or easy process. Remember, it is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient with yourself, take your time, and allow the benefits of regular exercise to support your healing and help you grow stronger.
