Finding Inspiration and Courage Through the Stories of Those We Care For
My career as a caregiver was not only successful but also very rewarding. I learned so much about so many different things. Sometimes the older generation just wants you to sit and listen to their stories.
One man I cared for told me he had once sat in a glass turret under the belly of a plane during World War II, where he shot at enemy aircraft. When he shared that with me, all I could think about was how scared he must have been. It wasn’t bulletproof, and that glass could shatter from a direct hit or break in a matter of seconds. It took real courage to do that as a soldier.
Each person I cared for left me in a state of awe. I was constantly reminded of everything they had lived through and endured. Their lives were so different from ours today, and the courage and bravery they showed in the face of those experiences stayed with me.
