Sherry Hudson-Lay, RN

Staff Registered Nurse
Kaiser Permanente
Valejo, CA 94591

Sherry Hudson-Lay, RN, is an experienced registered nurse based in Vallejo, California, with nearly 25 years of service at the Walnut Creek campus of Kaiser Permanente. She has built a long-standing career in telemetry and cardiac monitoring, providing direct patient care, clinical documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration in a high-acuity hospital environment. Over the years, she has also served in leadership capacities, including charge nurse responsibilities and assisting with unit management needs when required.

Her journey in healthcare began well before completing nursing school in 1996. Initially aspiring to become a physician or pediatrician, she experienced early setbacks that redirected her path. Following high school, she entered medical assisting training and became licensed in EKGs and phlebotomy, later working in a clinic where she gained hands-on experience with stress testing, cardiac diagnostics, gastric capsule studies, and IV therapy under physician mentorship. Recognizing the need to further her education, she returned to school full-time while continuing to work during breaks, ultimately graduating on the Dean’s List with her Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Contra Costa College.

In addition to her extensive clinical background, Sherry is ICU trained and maintains current STROKE and NIHSS certification, both of which are regularly required competencies within her practice. She also serves weekly on a wound care committee, where she evaluates patients for pressure injuries and contributes to care recommendations. Her professional philosophy centers on compassionate, patient-focused care—taking time to understand each patient’s personal history, providing clear education, and advocating strongly for their needs. Known for her clinical judgment and dedication, she values collaboration with physicians while confidently escalating concerns when patient conditions require urgent attention, always prioritizing safety, dignity, and respect.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about nursing is spending time and talking to patients. I love having that time, even though everything is computerized nowadays. I started before the computers, and while everything is in the computers now, I still want that touch and that hand, and I need to know my patient - not just why they're there, but their life history, their life situations. You find out people are widows or they're caregivers of their spouses and they're sick, and they want to get out as soon as possible. Education is the biggest thing - to educate them that I feel you need to get better in order to take care of that other person. And if you go home the way you are, you're not going to be able to take care of anybody. It's really about education and spending the time and holding the hand with that patient, getting to know them. A lot has touched my heart. It's like, if someone passes away and dies, it breaks my heart.
