Shayla K. Bratcher, MSN, BSN, RN
Shayla Bratcher, MSN, BSN, RN, is a dedicated Nursing Manager at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center, where she leads with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to veterans’ care. Guided by Abraham Lincoln’s enduring promise “to care for him who shall have borne the battle,” Looking back on my life, I never thought I would come so far, and I have worked hard to get here. Before starting my nursing career, I was a drug addict, and in a dark place, I got clean and started my nursing education, which many did not have faith I would complete, but I worked hard and showed those many and myself what I was made of and what I could do. I take pride every day in making sure our veterans are taken care of. When I began working at the VA, I fell in love with caring for Veterans and wanted to continue my growth here. Shayla views her work not just as a profession, but as a calling to serve those who have served. Her leadership emphasizes teamwork, accountability, and empathy—creating an environment where both patients and staff feel valued and supported. With a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Management from Western Governors University, Shayla combines advanced clinical expertise with strategic insight to improve operational efficiency and patient outcomes. Her background spans hands-on patient care and nursing administration, giving her a holistic understanding of healthcare delivery. As a manager, she focuses on fostering continuous growth and education among her team members, ensuring that high standards of care are consistently met and exceeded. Beyond her professional achievements, Shayla is deeply motivated by a personal passion for lifelong learning and service. She approaches every challenge with determination and a belief that meaningful leadership begins with listening, empathy, and action. Her vision is to continue growing within the VA system, strengthening programs that honor veterans through quality care, innovation, and respect—because, as she puts it, “This is not just a job, but a journey.”

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
Caring for Veterans, leading a great team caring for our Veterans at the bedside. Empowering my nursing team for excellence in caring for their patients. Assisting in leading new innovative ways for patient safety, patient, and staff satisfaction, being the leader who will step in and help my team when things get tough, or short staffing occurs. This is not a job for me; this is a journey in my career, not only caring for patients at the bedside but helping my team with their growth. As a leader, I strive to ensure that high standards of care are consistently met and exceeded, not only with myself but my team members.
