Sara Serafin, MSN, FNP-BC, is a compassionate and dedicated Family Nurse Practitioner serving the community of Cassopolis, Michigan. Since August 2025, she has provided primary care at a federally qualified health center, ensuring healthcare access for underserved populations. Sara works in a facility that offers a sliding scale for uninsured patients while accepting all insurance types, reflecting her commitment to equitable and patient-centered care.

Sara’s journey in healthcare spans over a decade. She began as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) from 2010 to 2018, gaining foundational clinical experience in long-term care. During nursing school, she expanded her skills as a pharmacy technician for two and a half years, working in retail pharmacy while completing her Associate of Science in Nursing at Ivy Tech Community College in May 2019. This early experience provided her with a unique perspective on patient care, medication management, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

After earning her RN license in June 2019, Sara practiced as a registered nurse for six years in diverse settings, including step-down units, pre-op and post-op care, outpatient infusion centers, and family practice clinics. Driven by the desire to provide more autonomous, patient-focused care, she pursued advanced education at Indiana University South Bend, earning her BSN in May 2021 and completing her Master of Science in Nursing in May 2025. She successfully achieved board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) on May 2nd, 2025.

Sara is an active member of the American Nurses Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the Advanced Practice Nurses coalition in Indiana. Describing herself as “toxically empathetic,” a philosophy she embraces from nurse Jen Hamilton, she believes there is nothing a patient could do that would make her not want to help them. Sara’s combination of clinical expertise, advanced education, and unwavering dedication to patient advocacy positions her as a trusted and highly capable healthcare professional.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What inspired me to become a Family Nurse Practitioner was the frustration I experienced as a registered nurse. On the floor, there were times I knew exactly what a patient needed, but I had to convince a physician to approve it. I wanted the autonomy to provide the care my patients required without those barriers. Now, working at a federally qualified health center, I have the opportunity to serve patients who may not have insurance through our sliding scale, while still accepting all insurance types. Being able to provide care to underserved populations and truly make a difference in the lives of those who need it most is incredibly meaningful to me.
