Roger Smith, LMHC

Roger Smith is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida with more than 40 years of experience in psychotherapy, having been licensed since 1987. Throughout his extensive career, he has worked across a wide range of clinical settings, including maximum-security psychiatric hospitals, correctional facilities, institutions serving individuals with developmental disabilities, private psychiatric hospitals, and community-based practices. His professional experience spans work with individuals across the full spectrum of functioning, from those with severe and profound intellectual disabilities to high-functioning professionals.

He began his career at Sunland in Tallahassee, where he conducted psychological assessments for individuals with significant developmental disabilities to support their transition into community-based group homes. He later served as Director of a 54-bed inpatient psychiatric unit at a maximum-security hospital near Gainesville, Florida, where he supervised a team of therapists and collaborated closely with psychology staff. Over the years, he has also worked in prison systems, specialized forensic units for individuals deemed incompetent to stand trial, and other high-acuity psychiatric environments, gaining deep experience in complex clinical and institutional care.

A significant portion of Roger’s career has focused on substance abuse treatment, particularly working with DUI clients from diverse backgrounds. He finds this work especially meaningful, as it often involves helping individuals who may not initially recognize the need for therapy. His therapeutic approach emphasizes helping clients develop critical thinking skills, examine their behaviors, and make constructive life changes. In addition to substance use treatment, he has extensive experience treating anxiety disorders, panic disorder, and providing general psychotherapy.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Roger has transitioned to providing individual psychotherapy primarily through secure video sessions, which he has found to be effective in allowing clients to engage from a comfortable and familiar environment. He continues to pursue professional growth with a strong interest in trauma-focused treatment, including advanced training in EMDR. Throughout his career, he has consistently embraced new challenges and diverse clinical settings, driven by a commitment to helping individuals achieve greater stability, insight, and overall well-being.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing psychotherapy is the opportunity to help people improve their lives in meaningful and lasting ways. I find human services deeply rewarding, particularly supporting individuals as they work toward greater stability, clarity, and personal success. My work with DUI clients has been especially impactful because these individuals come from all walks of life and often never imagined they would be in that situation. I help them understand the circumstances surrounding their experience, reframe how they view themselves, and recognize that change is possible. A key part of this process is helping clients identify realistic, positive behavioral goals—particularly around alcohol use and driving decisions. For some, this experience becomes a turning point, and a portion are able to make lasting changes that significantly improve their lives. Across all of my work, I am driven by a genuine desire to help people see a better path forward and act on it.
