Michael Fuchs, MD
Michael Fuchs, MD is a physician-scientist, Professor of Medicine, and Chief of Gastroenterology at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System in Richmond, Virginia, where he also holds an academic appointment at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He is a board-certified gastroenterologist with more than two decades of experience in clinical care, research, and academic leadership.
Dr. Fuchs completed his medical training in Germany at the University of Ulm Faculty of Medicine, followed by advanced academic training and a postdoctoral research fellowship in gastroenterology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. He joined Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 and has progressed through academic ranks to become Professor of Medicine and Chief of Gastroenterology. In this role, he leads a large clinical division, oversees gastroenterology research operations, and contributes to fellowship training and physician education.
His clinical and research focus is in gastroenterology and hepatology, with particular expertise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), chronic liver disease, and the development of non-invasive biomarkers and diagnostic technologies. His work spans translational research, clinical trials, and healthcare innovation, including the integration of artificial intelligence into endoscopy and colorectal cancer screening to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
