Michael Fuchs, MD, PhD, FAASLD, AGAF
Dr. Michael Fuchs, MD, PhD, is a distinguished gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and physician-scientist with an international reputation for excellence in liver disease, digestive health, and translational medicine. With more than three decades of experience in academic medicine, clinical care, and research, he has dedicated his career to advancing the understanding and treatment of complex liver disorders, including fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, liver transplantation, and liver cancer. His commitment to evidence-based medicine and patient-centered care has made him a respected leader in his field.
Dr. Fuchs earned his medical degree and doctorate from the University of Ulm Medical School in Germany and completed extensive postgraduate training in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and hepatology at leading academic institutions in Germany and the United States. His early research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School provided a strong foundation for a career that seamlessly integrates clinical practice with innovative scientific investigation. Throughout his career, he has remained dedicated to translating research discoveries into meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.
Currently, Dr. Fuchs serves as Chief of the Gastrointestinal and Hepatology Service at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University. In these leadership roles, he oversees comprehensive digestive and liver disease programs while mentoring the next generation of physicians and specialists. His contributions have strengthened clinical education, fellowship training, and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
An accomplished researcher and scholar, Dr. Fuchs has authored numerous scientific publications and has served in editorial leadership positions for several prominent medical journals. His expertise in hepatology, lipid metabolism, bile acid biology, and liver disease has earned him invitations to contribute to national and international professional organizations. He is a Fellow of both the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, reflecting his significant contributions to the advancement of digestive and liver health.
