Dr. James P. Gillen, MD, FACEP, is the Director of Emergency Medicine Education and an Associate Professor at USF Morsani College of Medicine, where helps mentor and educate the 30 residents of the USF Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine since 1986, Dr. Gillen balances his educational leadership with full-time clinical practice in the Emergency Department at Tampa General Hospital. His work reflects a deep commitment to advancing patient care while shaping the next generation of emergency physicians. A graduate of West Virginia University School of Medicine, Dr. Gillen completed his emergency medicine residency program at Geisinger Medical Center. Over his extensive career, he has gained experience across multiple roles within emergency medicine, allowing him to bring a broad perspective to both clinical practice and medical education. He is highly involved in curriculum development, residency training, and mentorship, combining his expertise with a passion for teaching and professional development. Outside of work, Dr. Gillen engages in community and public health initiatives, including serving on the board of The Phoenix, an organization dedicated to helping people in early recovery living in the greater Tampa Bay Area. Dr. Gillen's wife, Marlene Gillen, APRN, is a cardiology nurse practitioner who also works at Tampa General Hospital. Between Marlene and Jim, they have more than 45 years of dedicated service working at Tampa General. They both enjoy spending time with their four kids and five grandchildren, staying active through working out, weight-lifting, walking, golf and attending concerts, hockey games and movies. Through his dedication to education, patient care, and community engagement, Dr. Jim Gillen exemplifies the qualities of a physician-leader in Emergency Medicine.
