Catherine Zhu, MD

Dr. Catherine Zhu is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has been delivering high-quality, patient-centered care since completing her residency in 2019. She earned her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she studied from 2011 to 2015, before going on to complete a combined internship and anesthesiology residency at Columbia University Medical Center from 2015 to 2019. Now practicing with Teams Health at Englewood Hospital in Bergen County, New Jersey, Dr. Zhu specializes in general anesthesia and brings valuable experience managing complex and high-acuity cases, including trauma calls.

Before pursuing medicine, Dr. Zhu had a strong academic foundation in research and nearly followed a path toward a PhD in immunology, publishing several scholarly articles in the field. Although her career ultimately shifted toward clinical medicine, her research background continues to inform her analytical approach and commitment to evidence-based care. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she remains engaged in professional development through continuing medical education, grand rounds, and departmental presentations, contributing her expertise to the ongoing advancement of her field.

Originally from China, Dr. Zhu immigrated to the United States at the age of nine, where she faced the challenge of learning a new language and adapting to a different culture. These early experiences helped shape her resilience, determination, and strong work ethic—qualities that have been central to her success in medicine. She is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and is affiliated with the Englewood Hospital Foundation. With a balance of clinical excellence, intellectual curiosity, and personal perseverance, Dr. Zhu continues to make a meaningful impact in anesthesiology and patient care.

Dr. Zhu published several articles in immunology journals before medical school during her research years when she was considering pursuing a PhD. While she enjoys reading JAMA from her research days, she notes that her publications were in immunology, which is not directly related to her current field of anesthesiology, and she has not published recently due to her clinical practice demands.
