What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most is working with the families and the youth, trying to get them back home and out of the system. The youth we serve have endured extensive trauma and deserve to live their best life, to know they are worthy and capable of being successful, and mostly that they are loved! Some youth contact us after discharging from Rawhide to let us know how they are doing and how helpful Rawhide was for them. Most youth don't recognize the structure, support, and love provided to them at Rawhide until they are back in the communities. It's moments like these that motivate me to keep fighting the good fight even if we don't reach everyone; We are planting seeds for their success. The youth I've been blessed to serve have impacted my life and how the world looks through their eyes. I have served some of the most resilient youth who have endured tragedy, loss, and other trauma. I am amazed and in awe of their strength and perseverance after enduring major adversities. I never thought I'd work with adolescents, but it's been an insightful and fulfilling experience! I work with youth ages 11-17 who were brought to Rawhide for many different reasons, some being criminal history, loss of guardianship, foster care, CPS (Child Protective Services), or due to lack of supportive families. Rawhide works closely with counties, social workers, families, and other assets to ensure the best quality of care for the youth we serve. Rawhide has a phenomenal therapist team and equine-assisted therapy support team that work collaboratively to ensure quality of care and maintain the highest level of treatment. My favorite part of the job is working with the equines and seeing how they help the youth by matching their energy and emotions. It's the coolest thing I've ever experienced in my career!
