Treva J. Powell, RN
Treva J. Powell is a registered nurse with nearly four decades of experience in healthcare, currently serving as an MDS Coordinator at Avir Health Group in Odessa, Texas. In her role, she applies her extensive clinical and auditing expertise to support regulatory compliance, improve patient outcomes, and help prevent fraud within long-term care operations. She is also actively involved in ongoing professional development as she pursues advanced certification in MDS coordination and considers further advancement as a nurse practitioner.
Treva’s nursing career began in emergency medical services in Texas, where she was among the first female paramedics in the state’s EMS system. After earning her RN diploma from Methodist School of Nursing in 1988, she spent approximately 20 years in trauma and emergency medicine at both Level 1 and Level 2 emergency departments. She later expanded her expertise into critical care, correctional health as a nursing director in Texas prison systems, and occupational nursing. Throughout her career, she has maintained clinical practice at both Medical Center Hospital and Odessa Regional Hospital, continuing to serve patients in acute care settings.
In addition to her clinical work, Treva has contributed to nursing education by teaching anatomy and physiology at Odessa College. For Homeland Security, she provides emergency management training for police, DPS, fire departments, and other service industries. She is a member of the American Nurses Association and AAPACN, reflecting her commitment to professional excellence and long-term care standards. Guided by a lifelong dedication to helping others during critical moments, she combines compassion, leadership, and clinical expertise. Outside of nursing, she is also an accomplished pyrography artist, creating detailed artwork on wood, leather, and other materials.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is witnessing the expression in my patients’ eyes during what is often one of the most difficult days of their lives—the moment that communicates, “Thank you for being here.” I am also deeply fulfilled by the diversity of the field. Nursing requires continual learning across many disciplines; for example, I would not have expected to study accident reconstruction, but as a Risk Manager, that training proved invaluable in strengthening my practice and perspective.
