Shelly Youshock is a seasoned Registered Nurse and Care Manager with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York, bringing nearly four decades of diverse clinical experience to her role. Based in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, she specializes in leveraging advanced clinical competencies—including ACLS, EMR documentation systems, cardiology, and ambulatory care—to support effective care coordination and improved patient outcomes. In her current care management position, she applies her extensive bedside and systems-level expertise to help guide patients through complex healthcare needs and ensure quality, evidence-based decision-making.

Her clinical background spans multiple high-acuity and specialty settings. She began her career in operating room nursing, spending approximately 20 years in roles that included charge nurse, circulating and scrub nurse, trauma support, tissue harvest, and ambulatory ENT surgery. She later transitioned into critical care for a decade, where she earned and maintained her CCRN certification while working in intensive care environments. For the past several years, she has focused on outpatient cardiology, with hands-on experience in stress testing, cardiac CT preparation, and pre- and post-procedure care for cardioversions and TEE procedures.

Shelly holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Scranton and a Master’s in Nursing Education from Wilkes University. She has also contributed to nursing education as a clinical instructor and is a co-founder of the NEPA Nurse Honor Guard, a volunteer organization dedicated to honoring nurses at end-of-life services with dignity and ceremony. After a long and impactful hospital-based career, she has transitioned into care management, where she continues to use her clinical insight and leadership to influence patient care on a broader, system-wide level.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about nursing is being able to help people and make a difference in their lives. I've always wanted to give back to the nursing community, which is why I'm so proud that we just started the Nurse Honor Guard here in Northeast Pennsylvania. This is something I always wanted to start - it's a service where myself and three other nurses go to funerals of nurses who have passed away and honor them with a ceremony. We dress up in our full whites and wear blue capes, the traditional dress of a nurse, and we present a Florence Nightingale lamp and a white rose while saying a little speech about the person. We provide this service for nothing because it's about respecting our fallen nurses and giving them the recognition they deserve. My retired friends actually got the ball rolling further than I did since I'm still working, but we're doing this together now, and it means so much to me.
