Robeela Deans, FNP

Robeela Ruby Deans is a highly experienced Family Nurse Practitioner with more than three decades of nursing experience, beginning her career in 1995, and over 20 years in advanced practice since 2005. She earned her undergraduate degree from Loyola University Chicago and later completed her nurse practitioner training at Saint Xavier University. Robeela began her career as a registered nurse in the emergency department before advancing to a nurse practitioner role in a Level II trauma center, where she spent 15 years developing critical clinical skills and a strong ability to support patients and families during high-stress, emotionally complex situations.

Her diverse clinical background spans emergency medicine, psychiatric care, palliative medicine, hospice, and family practice. Robeela dedicated seven years to psychiatric medicine, working with children, adolescents, and adults, where she built meaningful, long-term connections with her patients and supported many through significant life milestones. She later transitioned into palliative and hospice care, which she considers her passion, spending 12 years in palliative medicine and additional years in hospice. During this time, she worked closely with interdisciplinary teams, including oncology and heart failure specialists, guiding patients and families through chronic illness and end-of-life care, including critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Board certified in palliative and hospice medicine, Robeela also holds certification to perform Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals. She is currently transitioning into urgent care while preparing to launch her own private practice. Her upcoming practice will offer an integrated approach to care, combining psychiatric services, family medicine with a focus on preventative health, nutrition, and exercise, and DOT physicals. Throughout her career, Robeela has also taken on leadership roles, mentoring new nurse practitioners, training students from Loyola University Chicago, and providing community education through lectures on pain management, hospice, and palliative care.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

The most rewarding part of practicing healthcare for me is helping people transition from one stage to another, especially in end-of-life care. I've been blessed to have had some wonderful patients, and at the end of the day, I walk away feeling like I did something good for them, and they feel the same way. Families have come back to me and talked to me, and I've gone to their wakes and funerals. Working with people to transition them through end of life is so rewarding - I called my 12 years in palliative medicine my dream job. While working in the ER was rewarding because you do save lives and make a difference, you don't really build relationships with your patients. Building that personal relationship means so much more to me than just knowing my skills and being proficient. In psychiatric medicine, it's been hugely satisfying to work with young kids in high school and middle school dealing with the stresses of social media, coming in feeling down, sad, and depressed, and now seeing them graduating from college. Some of them I call my kids, and they've kept in touch with me, saying they can't wait to tell me what's going on. That makes me cheerful every day.
