Dr. Pettit is a clinical staff pharmacist based in Greensboro, North Carolina, with experience in long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) pharmacy practice. In his current role at ScionHealth, he serves as one of a small team of full-time pharmacists responsible for a broad range of clinical and operational pharmacy functions. His daily responsibilities include prescription order verification, medication dispensing oversight, sterile compounding review, and ensuring compliance with USP 797 standards for IV preparations. He also manages medication inventory systems, including controlled substance ordering and stock maintenance, supporting safe and continuous patient care delivery.

In addition to operational duties, Dr. Pettit plays an active clinical role within the interdisciplinary care team. He participates in patient rounds, evaluates and optimizes medication regimens, and collaborates closely with physicians and nursing staff to support appropriate therapeutic decision-making. His clinical focus includes medication reconciliation at admission to prevent gaps in therapy, as well as ongoing monitoring of drug efficacy and safety. He regularly supports antimicrobial stewardship efforts, including antibiotic dosing adjustments and renal function monitoring to ensure medications remain appropriate throughout a patient’s course of care.

Dr. Pettit also provides patient education and discharge counseling, helping individuals understand their medication plans and addressing any concerns prior to transition out of the facility. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from Virginia Commonwealth University and has developed a comprehensive clinical skill set spanning both operational pharmacy management and direct patient care. His work reflects a strong commitment to medication safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and high-quality pharmaceutical care in a hospital setting.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I always knew that I wanted to do something I felt was meaningful and impactful. I couldn't really see myself doing a regular office job because I just feel like it'd be difficult to motivate myself to do so. I wanted to feel proud of what I did, so when I wake up every day, I'm like, okay, I'm doing something I feel like was really important. What really drew me to pharmacy specifically was learning about drug pathways and how medications interact with the body. I thought it was fascinating, and I figured pharmacy would be more about learning about the actual drug itself, which is what sparked my interest. Working in long-term acute care allows me to fill an important role because a lot of patients leave the hospital but they're still sick. They still need help but can't get it at the hospital, whether it's insurance reasons or bed space. So I'm able to fill that role here, continuing to care for patients who still need that level of support.
