Miranda Barney, BSN, RN
Miranda Barney, BSN, RN, is an accomplished psychiatric nurse leader with over 15 years of experience in inpatient behavioral health care. Passionate about mental health nursing as a third-generation psychiatric nurse, she has dedicated her career to serving adolescent, adult, geriatric, and veteran populations with compassion, professionalism, and clinical excellence. Her mission is to work in team-oriented environments where she can apply her expertise in psychiatric nursing, leadership, and staff development to improve patient outcomes while helping healthcare teams reach their highest potential.
Currently serving as an RN II on the inpatient mental health unit at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center, Miranda provides direct patient care while taking on leadership responsibilities such as charge nurse duties, milieu management, staff delegation, and treatment team collaboration. She specializes in crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, therapeutic communication, and creating safe, therapeutic environments for veterans in need of mental health support. In addition to her bedside responsibilities, she actively contributes to quality improvement initiatives, facilitates psychosocial group sessions, performs compliance audits, and serves as president of her unit’s council, where she leads staff-focused initiatives to enhance care delivery and unit performance.
Prior to her current role, Miranda spent a decade as a Nurse Manager with Horizon Health, where she oversaw behavioral health units across multiple states and demonstrated exceptional leadership in staff supervision, clinical operations, compliance management, and program development. Her contributions led to significant organizational improvements, including the implementation of attendance policies, development of new competencies and workflows, the successful launch of intake departments and behavioral health assessment centers, and the startup of specialized geriatric care units. Her leadership excellence was recognized when her team earned Horizon Health’s Clinical Program of the Year Award in 2021. She also played a key role in navigating healthcare operations during critical events such as Hurricane Michael, ensuring continuity of care for vulnerable psychiatric populations.
Miranda earned both her Associate of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bacone College, where she graduated with Dean’s Honor Roll distinction and was a member of the National Student Nurses’ Association. Licensed as an Oklahoma multi-state RN and certified in Basic Life Support, she combines strong academic preparation with extensive hands-on leadership experience. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Miranda is deeply committed to community engagement through suicide awareness walks, nursing student education, career fairs, and volunteer work with the American Red Cross.
