Joyce Loos, NP-C, is an Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner with more than 37 years of experience in nursing and a deep commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care. She joined Healthworks in 2021 and currently practices in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), where she focuses on delivering comprehensive, community-based healthcare services to diverse patient populations.

She began her nursing career in 1989 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1999. She later completed her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at UAB in 2012, specializing in Adult and Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner practice and becoming certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Her advanced training included clinical experience in an FQHC setting as well as a residency in UAB Geriatrics, where she developed a strong foundation in inpatient geriatric care.

Throughout her career, Joyce has gained extensive and diverse clinical experience across multiple specialties and settings, including open-heart intensive care, pediatric ICU for cardiac cases, and home health care. Her work in home care and geriatric-focused environments fostered a strong passion for caring for older adults, particularly those with complex and chronic health needs. This experience shaped her long-standing commitment to improving quality of life for elderly patients and their caregivers.

Currently, Joyce serves patients in a community-focused FQHC in Wyoming, where she provides primary care, addiction treatment services, and support for drug court and detention center populations. She works closely with interdisciplinary teams, including social workers, pharmacists, and dental providers, to ensure patients receive comprehensive and coordinated care. She is also affiliated with Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and is an active member of the AANP and the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA). Her dedication to underserved communities has been recognized with the United Hero Award from UnitedHealthcare in 2023.

Outside of her professional work, Joyce enjoys spending time with her family and pets, as well as reading, traveling, and exploring the outdoors. She particularly enjoys road trips through Wyoming, along with fishing and camping. Her career reflects a lifelong dedication to service, with a strong passion for community health and improving access to care for vulnerable populations.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I truly love what I do and find great fulfillment in caring for patients. Over the course of my career, I have had the opportunity to gain a wide range of clinical experience, including many years in ICU open-heart care, pediatric ICU cardiac care, and home health. These diverse roles have shaped my practice and strengthened my ability to care for patients across different levels of acuity and settings. My passion for geriatrics developed during my time at UAB Hospital, where there was a strong emphasis on inpatient geriatric care. Through that training and experience, I discovered a deep commitment to serving the geriatric population, which has remained a central focus of my practice.
