Joleen Barker is a dedicated registered nurse with over 20 years of experience in healthcare, beginning her career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 2006 after graduating from Gadsden State Community College in Alabama. She later advanced her education and practice, earning her Registered Nurse credentials and recently completing her RN program at Ventura College in California, where she is set to graduate in May. Her journey reflects persistence, adaptability, and a lifelong commitment to professional growth in nursing.

Throughout her career, Joleen has built extensive experience in long-term skilled nursing, where she developed strong clinical skills in patient advocacy, communication, electronic health record documentation, and the nursing process. She has also worked in various care settings, gaining exposure to both chronic care and more acute patient needs. Her background has strengthened her ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care while maintaining professionalism in high-demand environments.

Joleen is currently affiliated with Kindred Healthcare Development 2 Inc as a Registered Nurse and previously worked with NurseCore as a Licensed Practical Nurse for several years. She is actively pursuing additional certifications, including BLS, ACLS, and NRP, as she works toward her goal of transitioning into telemetry nursing. Her long-term aspiration is to specialize further in labor and delivery, where she hopes to combine her clinical expertise with her passion for supporting patients during critical life moments.

Outside of her clinical work, Joleen is deeply committed to service and community involvement. She serves as the Women’s Director at her church, where she organizes outreach programs, donation drives, and community support initiatives. A first-generation college graduate, she takes pride in her late entry into nursing, having begun her formal education at age 30. She considers nursing the most meaningful work of her life, remaining grounded in her belief that even on difficult days, making a difference in a patient’s life is what matters most.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing nursing is the ability to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Nursing has truly been the best decision I have ever made. I entered the field later in life, around the age of 30, and it was never part of my original plan. However, it naturally fell into place, and I am incredibly grateful that it did. Although the work can be challenging at times, I remain committed because I know that at the end of each day, I have impacted someone’s life in a positive way. That sense of purpose is what I love most about nursing.
