Jennifer M. Lohman, LPN

Licensed Practical Nurse
Hiawatha Homecare
Red Wing, MN 55066

Jennifer M. Lohman, LPN, is a dedicated healthcare professional whose career reflects nearly two decades of compassionate service, communication advocacy, and patient-centered care. Based in the Greater Minneapolis–St. Paul Area, she currently serves as a Licensed Practical Nurse with Hiawatha Homecare, where she combines her nursing expertise with advanced American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation skills to support patients with complex medical and communication needs. Her unique background in caregiving, deaf studies, and nursing has allowed her to build meaningful connections with patients and families while promoting accessible, inclusive healthcare.

Before becoming a licensed nurse, Lohman spent 16 years working as an adult companion and sign language interpreter for a client receiving around-the-clock nursing care. During that time, she developed extensive hands-on experience with ventilator care, oxygen management, tracheotomy care, and interdisciplinary communication support. Inspired to expand her ability to provide direct patient care, she pursued her nursing education at Minnesota State College Southeast, where she completed an intensive nursing program and graduated at the top of her class in 2026. She earned her LPN license on February 2, 2026, and immediately stepped into a specialized nursing role with Hiawatha Homecare caring for a young man who was deafblind and communicated through sign language.

In addition to her nursing credentials, Lohman holds an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree and Deaf Studies Certificate in ASL Interpretation and Transliteration from Saint Paul College, along with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders and a minor in Psychology from University of Wisconsin–River Falls. A member of Phi Theta Kappa and the Minnesota Board of Nursing, she is recognized for her empathetic bedside manner and her ability to help patients feel comfortable, heard, and validated. Jennifer believes exceptional healthcare is built not only on technical skill and knowledge, but also on trust, communication, and human connection.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about home care is that you get to develop a real relationship with the person you are working with and taking care of. When you're in a hospital or clinic or even dialysis, a lot of times you don't get to have that one-on-one with your patient. You're just taking care of them for this short time, and then they leave, and you have no idea what effect your care had on them. By doing home care, I see day in and day out the effect that my care has on my client and on the family, reducing their stress and their care load so they can just be parents and not have to always be the caregivers as well. They can relax more, and I get to see it day in and day out. That is wonderful, to have those connections and establish that relationship and build that trust with my client. I get to learn them inside and out, I get to know the predictabilities, and I can see things coming before they're an issue because you establish a history and you just learn about them. I think it helps you provide better care.
