Ilsa Nazario, MD
Dr. Ilsa Nazario is a board-certified pediatrician with nearly two decades of experience providing compassionate, comprehensive care to children and families throughout Puerto Rico. Since beginning her pediatric practice in 2007, she has specialized in general pediatrics while also building extensive expertise in neonatal and pediatric intensive care medicine.
Dr. Nazario earned her medical degree as a General Medical Surgeon from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico in 2001. She completed her internship at Jauco Hospital in Puerto Rico before pursuing her pediatric residency in Bayamon from 2004 to 2007. During her residency training, she worked extensively in pediatric intensive care, assisting with high-risk deliveries and developing advanced procedural skills, including chest tube placement, umbilical catheterizations, and endotracheal tube placement.
Following residency, Dr. Nazario dedicated many years to critical care medicine, serving in the NICU and PICU at both San Pablo Hospital in Bayamon and Auxiliomuto Hospital. Her experience includes 16 years at San Pablo Hospital and four years at Auxiliomuto, where she cared for critically ill newborns and pediatric patients requiring complex medical interventions.
Today, Dr. Nazario focuses on general pediatrics in underserved rural communities across Puerto Rico, including Barranquitas, Comerio, and Orocovis. She provides care for patients from newborn through 21 years of age, serving many agricultural families and individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds who face limited access to healthcare services. Deeply committed to preventive medicine and community outreach, she regularly participates in health education initiatives and speaks at local schools to promote wellness among children and families.
A member of the Puerto Rican Pediatric Society since 2004, Dr. Nazario remains passionate about expanding care for children with special healthcare needs, particularly those requiring tracheostomies, gastrostomy tubes, and ongoing medical support outside the hospital setting. Her mission is rooted in delivering high-quality, compassionate pediatric care to vulnerable populations while advocating for greater healthcare access in rural communities.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about my work is being able to help the little ones and provide medical services to families in rural areas. In urban areas, it's more easy to access medical services, but in the rural places where I work, it's more difficult for families to get access. So I'm trying to canalize and get these services for all families in those areas. I work with children from agricultural families with low socioeconomic status, and being able to serve this population and make healthcare accessible to them is what brings me the most fulfillment in my practice.
