Dr. Doris M. Iturrino is a board-certified internist with a subspecialty in geriatrics and over 20 years of experience in academic and clinical medicine. She has maintained a private practice under her own name for approximately 15 years, with locations in Mayagüez and Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Her clinical focus is age-friendly healthcare for older adults, particularly patients 65 and above, using a structured “Four M’s” framework—what matters, mobility, medications, and mentation—to guide individualized, patient-centered care. This approach emphasizes functional well-being, quality of life, and practical health outcomes tailored to the needs of aging populations.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Iturrino has served as an Associate Professor at Ponce Health Sciences University for two decades, where she is deeply involved in medical education and mentorship. She also recently assumed the role of Associate Director of the Skilled Nursing Facility at Hospital Damas in Ponce, where she is contributing to the development of a new Geriatrics Fellowship program aimed at strengthening advanced training in elder care.

Her academic credentials include an MD, MPH, Fellowship in the American College of Physicians (FACP), Fellowship in the American Board of Disability Analysts (DABA), and a recently completed Master’s in International Health from Ponce Health Sciences University.

Dr. Iturrino’s career reflects a strong commitment to lifelong learning, clinical excellence, and education. She is known for her academic engagement, strong bedside manner, and dedication to improving the quality of care for aging populations while also mentoring the next generation of physicians.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about what I'm doing is the satisfaction of healing people and making their lives better. There's also something special about working with students - the satisfaction of seeing them achieve their goals and being part of it is incredibly rewarding. I love that there's always a new problem every day. You don't have the same problem every day. You have to tackle various situations every day. That's what keeps it interesting and fulfilling for me.
