Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is the ability to truly make a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives, especially in situations where they have been returning to the emergency room repeatedly for the same unresolved issue. In those moments, I often pause and ask myself what is being missed—what more can be done to break the cycle and restore quality of life. One case that stands out involved a young patient who continued returning with persistent throat discomfort following a severe allergic reaction and intubation. Instead of repeating the same approach, I took a deeper look, ordered a CT scan of the neck and soft tissue, and discovered severe tracheal stenosis. After consulting pulmonary critical care, she underwent an emergent bronchoscopy with tracheal dilation and experienced complete relief. She never returned with the same complaint again, and that outcome remains one of the most fulfilling moments of my career.

Another deeply impactful experience involved a patient with metastatic cancer who was in severe distress and pain. In that moment, I focused not only on treatment but also on presence and compassion. I assured her that I would stay with her until her pain was addressed and relief was achieved. I held her hand, advocated for immediate pain management, and remained by her side until she found comfort. The gratitude she expressed afterward reflected the profound importance of simply being present for patients in their most vulnerable moments. These experiences are what have kept me committed to my role, as they allow me the autonomy to think critically, advocate strongly, and provide care that truly changes outcomes.
