Donald W. Alves, MD, MS, FS, FAAEM, FACEP, CCHP, is a highly experienced physician specializing in emergency and correctional medicine, with a career spanning more than 25 years. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1997, followed by an Emergency Medicine Residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital, New Jersey. Dr. Alves also holds a Master of Science in Emergency Health Services with a concentration in preventive medicine and public health from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and has completed a graduate certificate in Emergency Management. In addition to his medical training, he earned multiple undergraduate degrees and certifications in fields including criminal justice, fire safety management, biology, and chemistry, reflecting a lifelong commitment to interdisciplinary learning.

Throughout his career, Dr. Alves has served in diverse clinical and leadership roles, including Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Medical School, Assistant in Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and as the Medical Director for the Maryland State Police. His responsibilities have ranged from resident education and hospital committee service to supervising statewide emergency and public health programs. Notably, he directed comprehensive COVID-19 mitigation efforts for over 2,500 Maryland State Police personnel, implementing vaccination, quarantine, and isolation protocols that were emulated regionally and nationally.

Dr. Alves’ work in correctional healthcare has been equally impactful. He currently serves as the Eastern Regional Medical Director for Centurion Healthcare at the Eastern Correctional Institution, overseeing clinical operations, staff development, and patient care for incarcerated populations. In this role, he has streamlined clinic workflows, optimized resource allocation, improved patient education, and advocated for evidence-based programs, including trauma care, medication-assisted treatment, and inclusive healthcare for transgender and other marginalized populations.

A board-certified Emergency Medicine physician and Certified Correctional Health Professional, Dr. Alves holds numerous certifications, including ACLS, PALS, ABLS, Homeland Security Level III, and FMCSA Medical Examiner. He has contributed extensively to the field through teaching, lectures, publications, and clinical program development. His experience spans prehospital care, EMS leadership, disaster response, and specialized law enforcement medicine, reflecting a dedication to both patient care and public safety.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Alves enjoys reading, antiquing, walking, and spending quality time with family. His professional philosophy emphasizes integrating preventive health, emergency preparedness, and compassionate patient-centered care across every role he undertakes. Recognized by colleagues and professional organizations alike, Dr. Alves continues to lead initiatives that enhance clinical outcomes, promote public health, and advance the practice of emergency and correctional medicine.
