Dr. Christopher Carter is a nationally certified psychoanalyst (NAAP) and a licensed practitioner with a private practice in New York State. He is a member of the International Association of Jungian Analysts in Zürich, Switzerland, and brings decades of experience in clinical, community, and spiritual care. In his practice, Dr. Carter specializes in working with young adults, single adults, and couples, including those living with serious and persistent mental illnesses. His approach emphasizes establishing meaning and purposeful living, guiding clients toward alignment with their vocation and a greater sense of wholeness—what Jungian analysis terms “individuation.”

Prior to founding his private practice in 2021, Dr. Carter held senior leadership roles within major healthcare and social service organizations, including Senior Program Director at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center/St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester Division and Program Director at Urban Pathways. In these positions, he managed large-scale supportive housing and mental health programs, ensured regulatory compliance, supervised multidisciplinary teams, and developed evidence-based initiatives for chronically homeless individuals, veterans, and others living with serious mental illness. His professional path reflects a rare integration of clinical expertise and systems-level leadership.

Dr. Carter’s academic accomplishments include advanced degrees in Psychiatry & Religion from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, as well as postdoctoral psychoanalytic training through the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association. A published scholar and award-winning author, he critically examines analytical psychology, systemic racism, and ethical responsibilities within healthcare. Recognized as an Honored Listee in Marquis Who’s Who (2024–2025), he continues to contribute to the field through clinical practice, writing, teaching, and advocacy.

Dr. Carter is a vocal advocate for addressing racism and ethnic bias in society and healthcare. He emphasizes the importance of using “ethnicity” rather than “race” in interpersonal references and supports national initiatives to educate the public on systemic racial bias, informed by the United Nations’ work following WWII. Grounded in science, including insights from the Human Genome Project, he acknowledges the historical persistence of racial constructs and promotes ongoing corrective measures to advance more equitable, socially conscious approaches to psychoanalysis and healthcare.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I enjoy the interpersonal dynamics that are present in siting with a persons in emotional chaos. I enjoy envisioning their narrative, mentalizing in synch with the patient, and diving deep into the psyche (unconscious) to extract meaning to their narrative and current living conditions. I seek to neutralizing symptoms by getting to the unconscious, preverbal root of the matter. It is a joy when a patient arrives at an "Aha!" (meaning). I also enjoy offering an avenue through which individuals and couples and expose their vulnerabilities.
