I was recently named co-author on a surgical site infection protocol that we implemented in our pre-op department for orthopedic surgical patients. We were experiencing a high number of surgical site infections with our spine cases, so I was contacted by Infection Prevention regarding surgical site prep and evidence-based practice. We implemented 4% CHG chlorhexidine towelettes in our pre-op area on all spine cases, both posterior and anterior spines. The infection controllers who headed this project created a poster presentation for our Nurse Impact conference this year, and I was named co-author on it because of the information I helped provide and the support I gave to that initiative. I also serve on the AONL Foundation Research Review Committee, where I and a team of other senior leaders from across the nation review research papers that are submitted for publishing. In terms of reading, I regularly review Critical Care Nurse, the AMA journal, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Nurse Leader. Since I'm working on my doctorate right now, I'm always looking at articles and reviewing research.
