Anna Marie Duncan, MD profile on Americas Best In Medicine

Dr. Anna Marie Duncan is a compassionate family medicine physician with four decades of experience providing comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare. Currently practicing at Wendell Family Medicine under Cary Medical Management, she is recognized for her dedication to building long-term relationships with patients and delivering thoughtful, individualized care. Dr. Duncan earned her medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth in 1987 and completed her residency training at Dallas-Fort Worth Medical Center. Over the course of her career, she has practiced in Texas, Connecticut, and North Carolina, developing extensive expertise in chronic disease management, geriatric medicine, and mental health care, including the treatment of anxiety, depression, and postpartum depression.

Dr. Duncan’s journey into medicine began at a young age after spending time in a hospital intensive care waiting room while her grandmother was seriously ill. The experience inspired her to pursue a career in healthcare instead of law, leading her to family medicine, where she found the opportunity to combine meaningful patient relationships with a balanced family life. Throughout her career, she has remained committed not only to patient care but also to mentoring future healthcare professionals. As a preceptor and educator for nurse practitioner and medical students, Dr. Duncan has played an important role in shaping the next generation of providers through hands-on guidance, mentorship, and clinical instruction.

A respected member of the North Carolina Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic Association, and American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice, Dr. Duncan remains deeply committed to advancing quality healthcare and patient advocacy. In 2025, she was honored with the Value-Based Care Award from Cary Medical Management for achieving the highest level of value-based care reporting within the organization. Known for her attentive listening skills and compassionate bedside manner, Dr. Duncan believes the foundation of effective medicine is giving patients the time, understanding, and support they need, even within the growing complexities of modern healthcare.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I love my patients. I love being able to talk with them, and I love being able to help them and to offer them help that they take and take advantage of. What really drives me is the personal connection that family medicine provides. You get to know the people better than if you're a specialist. I enjoy my patients, and even though I've seen so much change over 40 years of practice, that connection with patients is what keeps me going. It's about being there for them, listening to them, and making a real difference in their lives.
