Ameika Bush, MD
Dr. Ameika Bush, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician, cardiology hospitalist, and founder of the Carbon to Diamond Medical Respite and Shelter. She has nearly 25 years of clinical experience in hospital medicine, with a strong emphasis on inpatient cardiovascular care and complex medical management. She currently practices with the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Dr. Bush earned her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and completed her residency at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where she continues to serve as an attending physician. Throughout her career, she has remained dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within acute hospital settings.
A defining aspect of Dr. Bush’s career is her specialization in nocturnal and off-hour hospital medicine. She has served as a nocturnist for over two decades, consistently working night shifts, weekends, and holidays in high-acuity environments. This long-standing commitment reflects both her clinical dedication and her focus on supporting patients during their most vulnerable hours.
Her mission in medicine is deeply personal, shaped by a traumatic experience at age 17 when she was struck by a vehicle and required multiple hospitalizations and surgical interventions. During her recovery, she developed a lasting appreciation for the role of night shift healthcare providers, which influenced her lifelong commitment to compassion and empathy in acute care medicine.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Bush is actively engaged in community outreach and advocacy. She organizes hospital-based initiatives such as clothing drives and food distribution for individuals experiencing homelessness. She is also the founder of the Carbon to Diamond Medical Respite and Shelter, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations and addressing health disparities through compassionate care and community service.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is being there for patients during the times when they need compassionate care the most - nights, weekends, and holidays. When I was 17, I was hit by a car while on vacation, and during my multiple hospitalizations and surgeries, I noticed that the people working night shifts were often short-tempered and unhappy because they got stuck with shifts nobody wanted. I realized that whenever I needed help as a patient, the staff would come in with bad attitudes, complaining about having to work those hours. That experience made me determined that if I made it through, I would dedicate myself to working those exact shifts - the ones nobody else wants. I try to make it nice for the patients, especially during holidays. It's my way of being a team player, and I even bring little gifts to patients to cheer them up, because it's horrible to be in the hospital when you should be at home enjoying your family. My lived experience as a patient is what drives me to provide the kind of care I wish I had received during those difficult nights.
