Vishnuteja V. Devalla

Rheumatologist
Welia Health
Duluth, MN 55803

Vishnuteja Devalla, he/him, is a board certified rheumatologist with approximately five years of clinical experience specializing in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. He is dedicated to delivering patient centered, evidence based care with a focus on complex systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other connective tissue diseases. His clinical philosophy emphasizes treating the whole patient, recognizing that rheumatologic illness often impacts multiple organ systems including the heart, lungs, kidneys, and musculoskeletal system. He strongly believes that high quality specialty care is rooted in a strong foundation of internal medicine and comprehensive clinical thinking.

He currently practices with Welia Health, a community based health system serving patients in Mora and Duluth, Minnesota, as well as with Rheumatologist OnCall. After spending five years in large academic and integrated health systems, he chose to transition into a smaller community focused practice environment in order to regain clinical autonomy and provide more personalized, patient centered care. In this setting, he is able to spend more meaningful time with patients, many of whom are farmers and working individuals, and provide continuity of care that prioritizes long term outcomes over productivity driven models. He is committed to guiding patients through complex diagnoses while ensuring they remain connected to appropriate specialty resources when needed.

Dr. Devalla completed his Rheumatology Fellowship at Dartmouth Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and his Internal Medicine Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital. He previously practiced at Essentia Health, where he gained extensive experience managing a broad range of rheumatologic conditions across both urban and regional populations. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Throughout his career, he has remained focused on expanding access to specialty care, strengthening patient advocacy, and delivering thoughtful, whole person treatment within evolving healthcare systems.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about rheumatology is that it still feels like I'm treating the whole patient. When I was going through training and rotating through different specialties, it felt like once you get into a specialty, you're in your own world. But with rheumatology, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis impact your heart, your lungs, and your bones, and lupus impacts your heart and kidneys, so you're still forced to engage with the whole patient. You can't just focus on their gut and forget everything else. That's what I loved about it the most - it was the only specialty that felt like I was still practicing all of medicine. I also love that in my current practice at this small organization, they let me practice the length and breadth of medicine and advocate for my patients. When someone comes to me for help, if it's not a rheumatologic disease, we don't just kick them out the door. I can help them navigate to neurology or other specialists and make sure they have everything they need. That type of practice is going away because it's more traditional, but I believe the ability to practice a little bit outside of your field ends up producing better quality care.
