Tasneem Z. Naqvi, MBBS, MD

Cardiologist, Echocardiographer, Internist
Professor
Mayo Clinic
Phoenix, AZ

Dr. Tasneem Z. Naqvi is a Professor and Consultant Cardiologist at Mayo Clinic, where she practices at both the Phoenix and Scottsdale campuses. She joined the institution in 2013, describing the opportunity as a natural fit because of Mayo Clinic’s pioneering role in non-invasive cardiology and echocardiography. Dr. Naqvi specializes in non-invasive cardiology, with particular expertise in echocardiography and vascular ultrasound. In the hospital setting, she oversees inpatient ultrasound procedures, interprets transthoracic echocardiograms performed by sonographers, and personally performs transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) procedures under anesthesia. She also performs cardioversions for patients with abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation and conducts hospital rounds, often seeing 30 to 35 patients daily alongside fellows, nurse practitioners, and medical students.

A recognized innovator in cardiac imaging, Dr. Naqvi is the only physician at Mayo Clinic performing pacemaker optimization using echocardiographic guidance, a specialized procedure designed to help patients who have not responded adequately to standard pacemaker therapy. She also serves as the principal investigator of the E-VOID trial, a multicenter study exploring a promising medication that may prevent calcium deposition and slow the progression of aortic stenosis. In her outpatient practice, she treats a wide spectrum of cardiovascular conditions, including valve disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, resistant hypertension, post-surgical cardiac complications, and patients seeking preventive cardiology care. She also manages individuals with POTS and other arrhythmias. A distinctive feature of her approach is her use of point-of-care echocardiography; she performs ultrasounds during patient consultations, often obtaining critical diagnostic information within minutes to guide immediate treatment decisions.

Dr. Naqvi is also a leader in preventive cardiology, directing Mayo Clinic’s carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and plaque screening program, which uses ultrasound imaging to detect early atherosclerotic plaque in the neck arteries of otherwise healthy individuals. This work allows physicians to identify cardiovascular risk earlier and intervene before significant disease develops. Beyond her clinical work, she is deeply committed to research and medical education. She regularly lectures, trains cardiology fellows in echocardiogram interpretation, and mentors trainees in advanced imaging procedures. She is the author of Point-of-Care Echocardiography: A Case-Based Visual Guide and has produced an extensive body of academic work, with roughly 200 manuscripts, numerous editorials and book chapters, and an h-index of 44 on Google Scholar. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, she spent 11 years on faculty at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following her cardiology fellowship there, and later served as Director of Echocardiography and the Non-Invasive Lab at the University of Southern California. Dr. Naqvi also completed several years of postgraduate medical training in England and holds a master’s degree in medical management. She maintains a unique bi-coastal lifestyle, commuting between Phoenix and Los Angeles, where her husband practices as a child psychiatrist.

Dr. Naqvi is a prolific researcher and author with an h-index of 44 on Google Scholar. She has 104 publications that have been cited at least 10 times each, and approximately 200 total manuscripts. She has also written numerous editorials, review articles, and book chapters. Her book 'Point-of-Care Echocardiography: A Case-Based Visual Guide' is available on Amazon. She has published extensively on handheld echocardiography, demonstrating in her research that physicians who have immediate echocardiographic information during consultations prescribe more targeted medications and make more appropriate referrals for advanced testing compared to those without this information. She has also published significant research on carotid IMT and plaque screening for preventive cardiology, and continues to conduct research on various cardiovascular topics. She is currently the principal investigator of the E-VOID multicenter trial studying a drug to prevent aortic stenosis progression. As she describes it, 'if I stop writing, my soul starts complaining.'

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is the detective work of diagnosing patients and figuring out what's going on with them. Seeing patients is like solving a puzzle or doing Sherlock Holmes work. The moment when I can determine what's happening with a patient gives me a great sense of satisfaction. It's a very exciting moment to know, because you're trying to detect and diagnose and figure things out. The quicker you can determine it, the better for you and the patient. I derive tremendous satisfaction from being able to use my expertise in echocardiography to immediately understand what's going on with a patient's heart, whether I'm at the bedside during rounds or in my office during a consultation. That 'aha' moment when I know exactly what the problem is, that's really a very good and exciting moment for me. Mayo is a wonderful place to work because it allows people to bring up their maximum skill. I have not used my skill to the extent I can use it at Mayo at any other place.
