Stephan Ibal Gomez, BSN, RN, CCRN is a dedicated critical care nurse and Clinical Coordinator based in the Fresno metropolitan area. He currently serves in dual roles as a Level II Neuroscience ICU Registered Nurse at Community Health System and as a Clinical Coordinator for the acute dialysis program at DaVita Kidney Care. Since becoming a Registered Nurse in 2020, Stephan has built a strong foundation in high-acuity care, managing complex ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, ventilator-dependent patients, and those requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CKRT), hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and apheresis (PLEX). In the neuroscience ICU, he performs detailed hourly neurological assessments—including GCS scoring and pupilometer monitoring—while collaborating closely with neurocritical care teams to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans.

Stephan’s journey in healthcare began as a Dialysis Technician, where his early exposure to chronic kidney disease management ignited his passion for patient advocacy and advanced nursing practice. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from National University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.70 GPA as part of a highly competitive integrated BSN cohort. In his role as Clinical Coordinator, he supervises acute dialysis nurses, ensures compliance with documentation standards, coordinates treatment assignments, and provides education to teammates while delivering urgent and STAT treatments across ICU, CVICU, ED, telemetry, and medical-surgical units. His CCRN certification, obtained in May 2025, reflects his advanced expertise in critical care nursing and hemodynamic management.

An active member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA), and the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, Stephan is committed to professional growth and advocacy within nursing. He is passionate about elevating nursing education, expanding ultrasound-guided vascular access practices, and improving patient safety in dialysis and critical care settings. As he works toward his long-term goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Stephan continues to combine procedural precision with complex clinical reasoning—bringing excellence, leadership, and compassion to every patient encounter.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about nursing is being a patient advocate and really getting to know my patients through their struggles. When I started as a PCT at a chronic dialysis center, I saw patients three days a week, and I really got to understand their lives, their struggles, and how they've overcome challenges. That experience opened my eyes to what patient care really means and what being a patient advocate is all about. Seeing patients through their struggles and being able to provide them with the care they need is what encouraged me to pursue a career where I can become a stronger advocate for them. Now, whether I'm in the neuroscience ICU dealing with complex stroke patients or coordinating acute dialysis care, I'm driven by that same passion for advocacy and providing the best quality of care for my patients.
