Dr. Sharon Y. Irving is a highly accomplished pediatric nurse practitioner, nurse scientist, educator, and clinician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with more than three decades of experience advancing pediatric critical care and nursing science. A nurse practitioner since 1993, she earned both her Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioner degree and her PhD in Nursing Science from the University of Pennsylvania, after completing her undergraduate education at Marquette University. Currently serving as a Professor of Pediatric Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Dr. Irving is recognized for her expertise in pediatric critical care, clinical research, healthcare leadership, and nursing education.
Since joining Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 2004, Dr. Irving has dedicated her career to caring for critically ill children and improving pediatric healthcare outcomes. For many years, she served as a bedside nurse practitioner in critical care, providing expert, compassionate care to patients and families during some of their most vulnerable moments. Approximately two years ago, she transitioned to the hospital’s GI, Hepatology, and Nutrition division, a move that aligned naturally with her longstanding research, inquiry, and quality improvement work in pediatric nutrition. Driven by a desire to continue growing professionally and explore new challenges, she embraced the opportunity to expand her impact in an area she believes is essential to improving the health and recovery of critically ill children.
In addition to her clinical and academic leadership, Dr. Irving is deeply involved in advancing the nursing profession through research, mentorship, and national service. Her work focuses heavily on nutrition therapy and feeding tolerance in critically ill infants and children, emphasizing the vital role nutrition plays in patient recovery and long-term health outcomes. She also serves in leadership roles with the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, including Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. Honored with prestigious distinctions such as FCCM, FAAN, FNAP, and FASPEN, Dr. Irving continues to influence the future of pediatric nursing through her commitment to evidence-based care, innovation, and the development of future nurse leaders.
