Shaowei Wan
Dr. Shaowei Wan is a distinguished palliative care researcher and public health educator specializing in Cancer Social Epidemiology, quantitative and qualitative social science, and econometrics. With advanced expertise in intervention design and dissemination & implementation (D&I) science, she has devoted her career to understanding and addressing disparities in aging and end-of-life care. Dr. Wan recently completed her NIH-funded T32 fellowship in Palliative Care and Aging at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (2022–2024) and currently serves as a Research Associate and Faculty Fellow at the University of Colorado Boulder Institute of Behavioral Science, with an affiliation with Palo Alto VA Hospital, where she focuses on improving access to high-quality palliative care for rural and underserved populations. Her research examines the social and structural determinants of aging-related disparities, including geographic context, religious and spiritual practices, and psychological wellbeing. Dr. Wan develops and implements innovative community- and patient-level interventions designed to enhance access to palliative and supportive care among vulnerable populations. Her current program leverages quantitative, qualitative, and pragmatic trial methodologies to investigate rural disparities in palliative and end-of-life care, with an emphasis on the intersections of age, geography, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic resources. In addition to her research, Dr. Wan is a committed educator and mentor, with extensive experience teaching health systems and policy, research methods, and pharmacoepidemiology. She has taught and guided students at institutions including the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, California Health Sciences University, and the University of Charleston. Through her scholarship, teaching, and leadership, Dr. Wan exemplifies a new generation of healthcare professionals dedicated to compassionate, evidence-based care that addresses both clinical outcomes and the broader social, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients and communities.
