Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most is the interaction with the residents. Even when I was a supervisor and did med tech work, I always helped my employees and stayed hands-on because I've always liked being in touch and talking to the residents and getting to know them. You learn the little quirks and stuff. A lot of residents don't have much family, or their family visits but they don't necessarily want to be in a nursing home or retirement home, so I try to make it fun for them. I've danced in the hallways with residents at probably every job I've had. When you're working in assisted living, residents are more active and there are more activities, so on top of giving them personal one-on-one time when I go to their room to help them or give them their medicine, I get involved in their activities. We've had cookouts for the 4th of July or Labor Day, movie nights, and I always advocate for the residents to make sure the activities are appropriate for them, not treating them like children when they're 80 and 90 years old.
