Shaelyn Eaton is a Registered Nurse based in Kaneohe, Hawaii, who has been practicing since January 2023. She currently serves as a School Nurse with RCM Healthcare Services, where she provides specialized pediatric nursing care across multiple schools on the island of Oahu. In this agency-based role, she is assigned to different school sites as needed, supporting students with complex medical conditions in both routine and emergency care settings.

Her clinical responsibilities include managing students with diagnoses such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, and severe allergies including anaphylaxis, as well as providing advanced support for students requiring tracheostomy care and tube feedings. She currently works primarily with a first-grade student with asthma and a severe peanut allergy, where she administers rescue medications such as albuterol and is prepared to respond with an EpiPen in emergency situations. Her work is highly hands-on, often requiring in-classroom support to ensure immediate response and continuous monitoring of student health needs.

Shaelyn earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University in Phoenix after completing her prerequisites at a community college. She previously worked at Straub Medical Center on the neuro-progressive care unit and is NIHSS stroke certified. She also presented an evidence-based project at the Hawaii Pacific Health Conference focused on non-pharmacological interventions for sundowning patients. With a long-standing passion for pediatric care, she is pursuing continued advancement in nursing with the goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner, ultimately aspiring to open a primary care practice and develop supportive living environments for children with autism and developmental challenges.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I always feel like caring for kids was my purpose. Getting this school nursing role has really - I just love the school nursing more than anything I've done in the past so far, just because it is with kids, and it's actually something that I'm super passionate about. I always knew I wanted to care for kids. I grew up just babysitting my brother and sister first, and then I babysat and nannied for probably 15 or more families when I was in high school. A lot of the students that we do work with in the school nurse setting have secondary developmental diagnoses on top of their medical diagnoses, so getting to be able to experience that, and although that's not what I'm there for, I still experience it, and I see the struggles of these kids, so I want to help them one day in the future as well.
