Samantha Irwin is a Licensed Practical Nurse who has been dedicated to the nursing profession since 2012. She earned her LPN from Maysville Community and Technical College and successfully passed her NCLEX on her first attempt. She began her career in long-term care at Johnson Mathers and later Ohio Valley Manor, where she developed a strong foundation in patient-centered care and clinical responsibility. She is currently based in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area and serves in correctional healthcare with Southern Health Partners, Inc..

Her journey into nursing was deeply inspired by the exceptional hospice care her grandmother received, which led her to pursue hospice nursing as a personal and professional calling. After two years in hospice care, she transitioned back into long-term care when census changes occurred, continuing to grow her clinical expertise. This path ultimately guided her into correctional nursing, where she discovered her true passion. In this role, Samantha describes the environment as similar to an emergency room, where unpredictability and rapid decision-making are part of daily practice.

Samantha is widely respected for her compassionate and dignified approach to patient care. She is known for treating every individual with respect, remembering names, listening to personal stories, and ensuring patients feel seen and valued regardless of their circumstances. Her approach has earned her recognition as a trusted and favored nurse among those she serves. She attributes her success and professional fulfillment to divine guidance, believing she was led into correctional nursing as an unexpected but meaningful calling.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about corrections nursing is the human connection I get to make with people who often feel forgotten. These inmates have done some horrible things, but when you find out their backstories and other things about them, you see them differently. Just being nice to them and remembering their names means the world to them. They freak out about that and think it's so awesome that somebody would remember them. I get a lot of repeat offenders, so of course it's easy to remember them because they were just there a couple weeks ago, and they'll say 'you're our favorite nurse, we love you' because I'll talk to them. I don't have any sense not to talk to people. It's fascinating to them that somebody would remember them and treat them like they matter. The work itself is amazing too because it's like working in an ER. You never know what's going to come through that door, you never know what's going to happen in a night. It is wild, but I've come to love doing this.
