Regina Calhoun, RN (She/Her) is an experienced healthcare professional based in Buffalo, New York, bringing more than three decades of compassionate service to her nursing career. She began her journey in 1994 as a Certified Nursing Assistant after transitioning from a hospitality background, where she developed a strong foundation in patient comfort and service excellence. In 2008, she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse credential through Erie 1 BOCES, and in 2024, she achieved her Registered Nurse degree from Trocaire College. Regina has remained a dedicated team member at Erie County Medical Center Corporation since December 1996, demonstrating exceptional loyalty and commitment to her institution and community.

Regina’s clinical experience is both diverse and comprehensive, spanning dialysis, long-term care, corrections facilities, hospital units, and internal medicine clinics. A self-described geriatric nurse at heart, she has found her true calling in dialysis nursing and plans to pursue certification as a Certified Dialysis Nurse or further specialization in nephrology. Her patients value her meticulous attention to detail and the genuine relationships she builds, especially in long-term care environments where she often becomes a trusted and consistent presence in their lives.

Grounded in empathy and guided by the golden rule — treating others as she would want to be treated — Regina approaches every patient interaction with compassion and integrity. She deeply respects the role of Certified Nursing Assistants and believes that beginning one’s career as an aide builds essential bedside manner and character. Looking ahead, she aspires to teach CNA programs, sharing her knowledge and passion with the next generation of caregivers. For Regina, nursing is more than a profession — it is a calling rooted in trust, dignity, and heartfelt human connection.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about nursing is the relationships I build with my patients and their families. I'm very blessed that I have a vocation where it's easy to go to work. My patients love me, I love them, it's not hard. When you like what you do and you're good at it, you just know that your patients appreciate you, and that's all that matters to me. Especially in long-term care, sometimes you're the only family that some of the residents have because you notice that they don't get family visits. You develop a bond where it's more than just you taking care of them - they become like your family. You're working a lot, so you're sometimes with them more than your own family. I've had families let me know how much they appreciate me because they can't do what I'm doing. The hospitality part of getting into the field came easy for me because I worked in hotels, so I could always comfort and care for people. That made it easy to go into the nursing field.
