Rafael A. Taboas O.D.
Dr. Rafael Taboas is a dedicated optometrist practicing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, who brings both family heritage and personal passion to the field of eye care. Raised in a family deeply rooted in ophthalmology—his father and uncle both served as ophthalmologists—Dr. Taboas was exposed to the profession from an early age. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with pre-med studies from the University of the Sacred Heart in Puerto Rico before pursuing his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry, graduating in 2017. After completing his formal education, he continued refining his clinical skills while working under supervision in ophthalmology settings and successfully passed his board certification exams in August 2025. Currently practicing at a refractive surgery clinic, Dr. Taboas provides comprehensive eye care services, including routine eye examinations and refractive surgery evaluations for procedures such as PRK. He offers advanced dry eye treatment utilizing state-of-the-art Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology and has developed particular expertise in prism correction for double vision. Working closely with ophthalmologists, he carefully evaluates the root causes of diplopia and ensures appropriate co-management or referral when necessary. Serving a predominantly Hispanic and Latino patient population, he frequently monitors and evaluates diabetic patients for retinopathy and performs advanced diagnostic testing, including OCT imaging, visual field testing, and fundus photography. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Taboas values discipline, balance, and personal growth. He is a third-degree Shotokan karate black belt and enjoys swimming, pursuits that reflect his dedication and focus both inside and outside the exam room. With a blend of strong family influence, advanced technical training, and a patient-centered approach, Dr. Taboas continues to build on his legacy in eye care while delivering modern, compassionate services to his community.
