Michaela Elizabeth Murphy, PharmD, is an inpatient intern pharmacist at Rush University Medical Center with extensive experience in clinical pharmacy, research, and patient care. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2020, following a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Pre-Pharmacy, from the University of Iowa. During her pharmacy studies, Michaela completed multiple internships at Rush University Medical Center, where she contributed to initiatives such as the Patient Take-Home Inhaler Project, the Medicinal Leech Protocol, and the Inpatient Intern Mentoring Program, while gaining hands-on experience in hospital pharmacy operations and medication reconciliation.

Throughout her career, Michaela has demonstrated a strong commitment to clinical research and interprofessional collaboration. She conducted studies on patient outcomes in acute myeloid leukemia, interventional radiology procedures, and medication adherence, presenting her work at the Midyear Clinical Meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Additionally, she served as a clinical laboratory instructor at the University of Illinois Chicago, educating pharmacy students in compounding and laboratory procedures compliant with USP standards. Her dedication to patient-centered care extends beyond the hospital, as evidenced by her volunteer work with bone marrow transplant patients and hospital support programs.

Michaela’s professional focus has evolved toward pioneering pharmacist integration into the care of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). After returning to Minnesota to care for her father, who was diagnosed with ALS, she recognized a critical gap in ALS care teams, where pharmacists are not traditionally involved. Driven to improve outcomes for this underserved population, Michaela is committed to developing pharmacist-led initiatives in ALS patient care, with the goal of implementing these innovations at institutions such as the Mayo Clinic. Her work exemplifies a blend of clinical expertise, research proficiency, and compassionate patient advocacy.
