Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I love my patients. I love just getting to know people and creating a bond. I think that's so important. What really drew me to medicine was the ability to help people and give back to my community. I've always been involved with community service since I was a young kid - that's why I volunteered with the fire department for 10 years. But it just wasn't enough. I felt I wasn't able to really provide enough services or time to my patients or the community in my previous roles. I've always been fascinated by how the body works and by science. I like mysteries and solving puzzles - finding something that's broken and figuring out why it's broken and putting it back together. I've always liked to deconstruct things to figure out how they worked. Internal medicine was a good fit for that because people come in with these complex, mystery symptoms - zebras, we call them - and it's a challenge, it's a puzzle. You can't just spend 10 minutes with someone to really figure out what's going on. You have to research, ask lots of questions, do a lot of digging in data and lab work and imaging. It's about being a problem solver.
