Martin Hauer-Jensen, M.D. Ph.D.
Martin Hauer-Jensen, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), where he has had a distinguished career spanning over three decades. He previously served as Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Surgery, and Pathology, as well as Associate Dean for Research in the UAMS College of Pharmacy. He was also the Founding Director of the Division of Radiation Health, a role in which he advanced the institution’s mission in radiation research and clinical care. In addition, Dr. Hauer-Jensen has held positions as a staff surgeon at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and directed the Clinical Trials Office at the Norwegian Radium Hospital.
Dr. Hauer-Jensen’s research focuses on the effects of radiation on normal tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. His work seeks to uncover the mechanisms behind radiation-induced injury and to develop strategies that prevent short- and long-term complications in cancer survivors. He is also dedicated to creating safe, effective medical countermeasures against radiological or nuclear threats and addressing radiation exposure challenges in space travel. Over his career, he has published more than 300 scientific articles and book chapters, primarily in gastrointestinal radiation biology, and his research has garnered over $100 million in funding from leading institutions, including the National Cancer Institute, NIAID, NIGMS, DTRA, and BARDA.
A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Hauer-Jensen has served on numerous national and international advisory boards and review panels and is a former Chair of the Radiation Study Section at the NIH. He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in Radiation Biology from the University of Oslo and completed postdoctoral training in Radiation Biology at the University of Iowa. His specialties include general surgery, radiation biology, and drug development, and his work continues to shape clinical practice and research in radiation medicine worldwide.
