Lorraine M. Lazar, MD, PhD

Dr. Lorraine M. Lazar is a dedicated child neurologist and pediatric epileptologist who has spent more than 26 years caring for children with neurological conditions, particularly epilepsy. Originally from Long Island, New York, she attended the University of Pennsylvania for her undergraduate studies before entering the MD-PhD program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she graduated in 1993. Her doctoral research focused on molecular neurobiology and neuroscience, laying a strong scientific foundation for her future work in pediatric neurology. Dr. Lazar completed her comprehensive medical training at New York Hospital–Cornell in 1998, which included pediatrics, neurology, child neurology, and a specialized epilepsy fellowship.

After practicing in New York for one year, Dr. Lazar moved her practice to New Jersey in 2000, where she has remained for the past 25 years. For the last 11 years, she has been an integral member of the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group (NEREG), a private consortium practice created to address the shortage of epileptologists by providing specialized epilepsy care across multiple hospitals in New York and New Jersey. She currently serves as Program Director for the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, a Level 3 epilepsy center that she is actively working to elevate to Level 4 status. Her clinical focus includes identifying patients whose seizures are not controlled with medication and evaluating whether surgical approaches may offer a cure or significant improvement.

In addition to her epilepsy work, Dr. Lazar and her colleagues serve as general child neurologists for inpatients at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. She also maintains an active role in medical education, teaching pediatric neurology fellows, neurology residents, and pediatric residents at University Hospital in Newark. Dr. Lazar holds hospital affiliations with Atlantic Health and Hackensack University Medical Center and regularly presents lectures and grand rounds at medical institutions. A member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, she has also contributed to the medical literature with a published chapter in a pediatric textbook. Through her clinical care, teaching, and leadership, Dr. Lazar remains committed to advancing the treatment of epilepsy and improving outcomes for children with neurological disorders.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about practicing medicine are really two things that go hand in hand. Intellectually, the cases can be very challenging, and if you're someone who likes puzzle solving, it is intellectually stimulating, and I will never get tired of that. But attached to that intellectual challenge is that beautiful, human, small person who is just starting out in life, and they've been given this unasked-for obstacle of epilepsy. Trying to get them through it or cure them is incredibly rewarding. You know, every day when you're on call and you have long hours and long weekends and long days, you just think back to the looks on those kids' faces or the parents' faces when you've helped them. You just live with that. It's priceless. There's nothing better than getting a hug from a kid whose seizures you've cured through an epilepsy surgery program.
