Laurie Peercy, MSN, RN, DNP, AGNP-BC, is a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner practicing in the Greater Chicagoland Area. Originally from Boston, she moved to Chicago to pursue nursing and went on to earn both her Master’s (MSN) and Doctorate(DNP) degrees from Rush University. Laurie began her career as a nurse on a transplant surgical floor, where she developed strong clinical skills as well as the empathy and communication necessary to support patients and families during vulnerable times. She also gained international experience as a surgical assistant in rural underserved communities, shaping her commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. As a Nurse Practitioner, Laurie has provided primary care to older adults across a variety of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, sub-acute rehab, telemedicine, and outpatient clinics. She has been practicing Value Based Medicine with Oak Street Health since 2020 serving older adults in underserved communities. In 2023, she took on a faculty position with Oak Street Health’s national NP Fellowship Program in partnership with the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Here, she provides education, preceptorship, and mentoring to new graduate nurse practitioners and helps guide them through the transition to practice; a role she finds deeply rewarding. Laurie is dedicated to advancing healthcare through both direct patient care and professional mentorship. She focuses on delivering evidence-based, compassionate care while supporting the growth of colleagues and the next generation of nurse practitioners. Her work is characterized by a commitment to collaboration, innovation, and fostering excellence in nursing practice.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is the ability to make a tangible difference in patient’s lives through prevention and value-based care. My experience as an RN working inpatient allowed me to see first hand that many admissions could have been prevented had patients received quality care in the outpatient setting. I believe that primary care is the root of our healthcare system and where we can make the biggest impact as providers.

I find value-based medicine deeply rewarding because it allows me to deliver high-quality care tailored to each patient’s needs, emphasizing prevention, holistic well-being, and collaboration across an interdisciplinary team. It is incredibly fulfilling to see the ripple effect of this work—not just improving individual patient outcomes but also strengthening the health of entire communities!
