Latoya Hairston
Latoya Hairston, LPN, has dedicated her life to nursing, building a career defined by compassion, adaptability, and a steadfast commitment to patient-centered care. Her journey in healthcare began at just fourteen years old, when she volunteered as a candy striper, completing more than 1,400 hours of community service. Growing up as the youngest of five siblings, she naturally embraced a caregiving role, which, combined with her early volunteer experience, inspired her to pursue a lifelong career in healthcare.
Hairston earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in 1998 after completing health occupations courses in high school. She continued to advance her education, transferring to Winston Salem State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree and earning a range of specialized certifications spanning nutrition, chronic care management, managed care, remote patient monitoring, and data abstraction. She is currently working toward certification in functional medicine, demonstrating her commitment to staying at the forefront of patient care.
In 2012, Hairston passed the North Carolina nursing board exam, officially becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. She gained extensive clinical experience during nearly two decades at a local hospital prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, caring for diverse patient populations in fast-paced environments and honing her clinical expertise. In recent years, she transitioned to a remote role with UnitedHealthcare, where she has served as a case manager for nearly three years. In this position, she collaborates with patients and healthcare providers to ensure adherence to care plans, close gaps in treatment, and provide holistic, preventive care. This role allows her to engage with patients on a deeper level, understanding their concerns, challenges, and overall well-being.
Throughout her career, Hairston attributes her success to a strong moral foundation, faith, consistent dedication, and a genuine love for people. She continues to evolve both professionally and personally, embracing growth, self-reflection, and balance. Her career reflects the vital role nurses play in the ever-changing healthcare landscape and underscores the power of compassion in driving meaningful patient outcomes. Latoya Hairston stands as an example of how passion, resilience, and continuous learning can shape a lasting and impactful career in healthcare.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about my current role is the ability to connect with patients on a deeper, more personal level. Unlike traditional bedside care, where the focus is often on assessments, medications, and routine tasks, this role allows me to truly understand who my patients are—their concerns, fears, and what matters most to them. I love being able to slow down, really listen, and provide care that addresses both their clinical and emotional needs. At the same time, I still cherish the hands-on aspect of nursing—the feeling of walking into a patient’s room, ensuring they are comfortable, and meeting their needs with compassion and attention.
