I've been practicing as a nurse for 25 years, and I've been in OB the whole time, though I've branched off occasionally into different areas of women's health. I started my career after getting my ADN from Tomball Lone Star Community College in 2000, and then I went to Texas Women's University to do a bridge program to get my BSN in 2003. I began working at Tomball right after my ADN as a postpartum nurse back in 1999 as a student, and that's where I stayed throughout my career. I did fertility for a little while when we opened up a clinic within the hospital that was a fertility clinic, so I was able to work with patients that had ovarian hyperstimulation, that were trying to get pregnant. I also worked with some cancer patients that had basically gynecologic cancer, working with a gynecologist oncologist who did surgeries at the hospital. I'm also a lactation assistant - I went through a program with my hospital by shadowing a lactation consultant, and I was able to become an assistant. I would come in and do lactation work on my days off because that's my favorite, I love doing that. I became a charge nurse and did that for a while, and I loved charging because I got to help the younger nurses, take them under my wing, and show them things - little tricks of the trade that help you out when you get into a situation. I also did community education for a while at the hospital, teaching the Lamaze classes, the birthing classes, for about a year. I quit last year and retired because I just needed to give it up or take a break for my own mental health, but I'm looking to get back into nursing, especially phone triage. I would really like to do triage work remotely from home part-time because I don't want to lose those skills. What kept me in it all this time is just a love of OB and a love of women's health - that's where my heart is. I found that there were so many multiple facets, it's multifaceted, and I enjoyed going into those for a time, and it would give me a little bit of a break from the normal things. I really fell in love with postpartum particularly and stayed there the longest.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I love most about nursing is working in women's health and OB - that's where my heart is. I really fell in love with postpartum particularly, and I stayed there the longest. My favorite thing is lactation work - I love doing that so much that I would come in and do lactation on my days off. I also loved being a charge nurse because I got to help the younger nurses, take them under my wing, and show them things. Instead of them doing things the way they learned to do it, I could show them things that they didn't know, little tricks of the trade. My way wasn't the best way by far, but when you get into a situation, it helps you out. I found that there were so many multiple facets in women's health - it's multifaceted - and I enjoyed going into those different areas for a time. Whether it was fertility, working with ovarian hyperstimulation patients, or teaching Lamaze classes, each gave me a little bit of a break from the normal things and kept me interested.
