Katina Varner, DNP, FNP-BC
Katina Varner, DNP, FNP-BC, is a highly skilled and compassionate Family Nurse Practitioner currently practicing at Methodist Hospitals in the Greater Chicago Area. With 13 years of experience as a registered nurse and six years as a nurse practitioner, Dr. Varner has developed a broad clinical background spanning med-surgical care, anesthesiology, and pain management. She began her career in a mid-sized hospital in northwest Indiana and later specialized in pain management under Dr. Tarek Shabandar, gaining expertise in both acute and chronic care management.
Dr. Varner holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner Board Certification (FNP-BC) from Valparaiso University, along with a Master of Science in Nursing Education, an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Purdue University. She has contributed to nursing research as a participant in the Northwest Indiana Nursing Research Consortium, including the 1 Million Global Catheters PIVC Prevalence Study, and her doctoral research was published in the VU Annals. Recognized for her excellence in evidence-based research, Dr. Varner is committed to integrating clinical expertise with the latest scientific findings to enhance patient care outcomes.
Passionate about holistic and patient-centered care, Dr. Varner plans to launch her own clinical practice focusing on women’s health, wellness, and functional medicine. She emphasizes a naturopathic approach, addressing the root causes of health issues while fostering overall well-being. Beyond her clinical work, she is dedicated to education and mentoring the next generation of nurses, combining her extensive practical experience with a commitment to teaching, research, and community engagement.

Dr. Katina Varner’s doctoral research was published in the VU Annals. She received the Excellence Award for Evidence-Based Research from Purdue University, and her findings were presented at the Northwest Indiana Patient Safety Coalition in December 2012. In addition, Dr. Varner contributed as a research participant in the Northwest Indiana Nursing Research Consortium’s 1 Million Global Catheters: PIVC Worldwide Prevalence Study.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is helping others and making a meaningful impact on their lives. I’ve built a diverse nursing background, from managing acute illnesses as a registered nurse to specializing in chronic disease care, and I pursued advanced education to expand my opportunities. One of my greatest passions is teaching, and with a Master of Science in Nursing Education, I look forward to mentoring the next generation of nurses.
