Katherine Gragg
Katherine has dedicated 12 years to nursing, inspired by a deeply personal journey that began in childhood. When she was in first grade, her father survived a devastating heart attack and cardiac tamponade, undergoing multiple open-heart surgeries. Surgeons referred to him as the “A walking Miracle,” as he survived procedures he was never expected to live through. Witnessing his fight for survival—alongside her mother’s ongoing battle with rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis—shaped Katherine’s understanding of vulnerability, resilience, and the critical role compassionate healthcare plays in a family’s life. Her father’s unwavering work ethic and steadfast support, including caring for her sons while she pursued her education, became a cornerstone of her success and determination. Katherine specializes in long-term care and geriatrics, with a particular passion for wound care—an area she considers one of the most rewarding aspects of her practice. She spent eight years with a predecessor organization before continuing four additional years with CommuniCare, building nearly her entire nursing career within the same healthcare system. Rising into leadership, she served as Director of Nursing for almost three years before briefly exploring home health. Ultimately, her heart led her back to long-term care, where she now serves as Director of Nursing at Seneca Health Care Center, committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to elderly residents. She is wound care certified through Vahora Wound Doctors and began her nursing career as an LPN in 2014 before earning her RN credentials. Katherine earned her Associate’s degree from the University of Charleston in August 2022 and completed her Bachelor’s degree in April 2023, achieving Dean’s List honors throughout her bachelor’s program. Looking ahead, she is considering pursuing a master’s degree and nurse practitioner certification in mental health through Chamberlain University. Motivated by the significant shortage of mental health resources in her rural community—particularly within long-term care settings—Katherine hopes to address the root causes of behavioral health challenges rather than relying solely on medication management. Her career reflects a powerful blend of personal empathy, clinical expertise, and visionary leadership in nursing.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I love about being a nurse is the rewardment of getting to know that you have taken care of somebody that truly needed you on their worst days. Being there for the families when they've lost somebody, for their worst days, just that fulfillment from the residents and the patients, and knowing that you've done a good job of taking care of them. It's about being there for people when they truly need you the most, giving them the best care possible, and for my long-term care residents, making sure they have the best end-of-days life that they can have and making that fulfillment for them. It's not about money or what money we can save, it's about patient care and truly giving them the best.
