Juan Gutierrez-Mazorra, MD
Dr. Juan Gutierrez-Mazorra is a highly accomplished pediatric anesthesiologist with over five decades of clinical experience, specializing in perioperative management, anesthesia for complex pediatric cases, and intensive care oversight. He currently serves as President of Pediatric Anesthesia Associates PC in Birmingham, Alabama, where he provides consultation in perioperative anesthesia management, focusing on optimizing pediatric patients for surgery and managing difficult airways using advanced technology.
Beginning his career in 1969, Dr. Gutierrez completed his internship at West Virginia University School of Medicine, followed by residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center and a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology at University of Alabama Hospital. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, cum laude, from Northeastern University in 1965, and his Doctor of Medicine from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1969. His extensive training laid the foundation for a career dedicated to excellence in pediatric anesthesia.
Dr. Gutierrez served as Chief of Anesthesia at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama for 55 years, transforming the department from a small operation of four operating rooms with two anesthesiologists and five nurse anesthetists into a comprehensive program comprising 20 anesthesiologists and 50 nurse anesthetists, managing approximately 45,000 cases annually. Under his leadership, the hospital established itself as a leading center for pediatric anesthesia, providing care for patients with complex medical conditions including diabetes, cancer, and congenital disorders.
Beyond clinical care, Dr. Gutierrez has made significant contributions to professional education and mentorship. He is a founding member of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia, holding membership number 16, and remains active in the organization, sharing his expertise with younger physicians and emphasizing the importance of experience, humility, and patient-centered practice. His career has also included roles as an operating room director, risk management consultant, and legal medicine expert, further broadening his impact on the field.
Dr. Gutierrez’s professional excellence has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Robert M. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award for Pediatric Anesthesia from the American Academy of Pediatrics Anesthesia and Pain Management Section. Fluent in Spanish, he has consistently demonstrated leadership, innovation, and dedication to improving pediatric care. What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most is being part of a team that provides safe, compassionate, and expert care to children undergoing major procedures. I find it incredibly rewarding to guide families through what can be a stressful experience and to know that my work helps give them confidence and peace of mind. Being able to combine clinical expertise, experience, and teamwork to ensure the best outcomes for young patients is deeply fulfilling
