Joy Gottshall
Joy Gottshall is a highly experienced school psychologist with over 45 years of service in North Carolina’s public school system. She has been a valued member of Guilford County Schools since 1983, providing psycho-educational assessments, consultation, and program development to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. Known for her student-centered approach, Joy collaborates effectively with educators, families, and administrators to enhance educational outcomes.
Before joining Guilford County Schools, Joy served as the sole school psychologist for Person County Schools, conducting comprehensive assessments for exceptional children and supporting the Academically Gifted program across 11 schools. She began her career as a regional school psychologist for Caswell and Person counties, demonstrating early dedication to addressing diverse student needs and navigating complex educational systems. Throughout her career, she has contributed to developing procedures and assessment tools that improve student learning and well-being.
Joy earned her Master’s degree in Psychology with a focus in School Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her work has been recognized with multiple awards, including Top School Psychologist in Guilford County and the Marquis Who’s Who Award. Passionate about children’s development and education, Joy continues to make a lasting impact through her expertise, thoughtful guidance, and unwavering commitment to student success.

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?
What I enjoy most about practicing in school psychology is the opportunity to work with the unique and diverse children I serve. Each child brings their own personality, challenges, and strengths, and being able to support their growth and well-being is both rewarding and inspiring.
