Jessica Ramos

Jessica Ramos, FNP-BC, is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner currently practicing at Kaizen Donna Medical Clinic alongside Dr. Jose Peña and the Kaizen network in the Rio Grande Valley. With more than 23 years of nursing experience and nearly two years as a nurse practitioner, Jessica brings a depth of clinical expertise shaped by decades of service in emergency, pediatric, and geriatric care. Her current focus in adult internal medicine and geriatrics reflects both her commitment to lifelong learning and her dedication to serving patients across the lifespan.

Jessica’s passion for healthcare began early. At just 13 years old, she enrolled in South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High), a distinguished magnet school in Mercedes, Texas, dedicated to preparing students for careers in the health sciences. While there, she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, competed in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), and completed hospital clinical rotations during her junior and senior years.

She advanced from Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to Registered Nurse (RN) while working two jobs and managing significant family responsibilities, demonstrating the resilience and determination that would come to define her career. Jessica spent many years serving as an emergency room charge nurse on night shift before dedicating a decade to school nursing, all while continuing her education.

In August 2023, she earned her Family Nurse Practitioner degree from Walden University and became board-certified as an FNP-BC. During her tenure as a school nurse, she performed lifesaving CPR and AED intervention during a cardiac arrest on campus — an experience that contributed to strengthening heart-safe school initiatives within the district.

Jessica’s professional philosophy centers on compassion, patient education, and advocacy. She believes healthcare should be approachable and empowering, ensuring every patient feels heard, respected, and understood. She approaches each encounter with the same care and dignity she would want for her own family members.

Guided by strong mentorship and a passion for growth, Jessica is currently pursuing doctoral studies while continuing to serve her community with integrity and heart. For her, true success is measured not only by clinical outcomes, but by the trust placed in her care.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

What I enjoy most about practicing medicine is being able to truly make a difference in someone’s life — not just clinically, but personally. I love building relationships with my patients, educating them, empowering them to understand their health, and walking alongside them through both acute issues and chronic conditions.

Medicine allows me to combine science, critical thinking, and compassion all in one. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing improvement — whether it’s better lab results, controlled blood pressure, stabilized diabetes, or simply a patient saying, “I feel heard.”

For me, it’s not just about diagnosing and prescribing — it’s about advocacy, trust, and helping people feel safe and supported in their healthcare journey. I love to educate and teach my patients. I show up with compassion, skill, and integrity every day, and even on the hard days - and there's a lot more hard days than good days, I'll tell you that - just knowing that my patients feel safe with me means the world.

What do you attribute your success to?

I truly believe any success in my life comes from God first. My faith has always been my foundation — it keeps me grounded, reminds me to stay humble, and guides the way I serve others. I’ve always tried to lead with a nurturing heart. Whether it’s in my home, my clinic, or my community, I believe in showing up with compassion, grace, and integrity. Success to me has never been about titles or recognition — it’s about being faithful with what God has entrusted to me.

Being a mother is my greatest blessing and my highest calling. Raising my children to be kind, strong, and rooted in faith has always mattered more to me than any professional achievement. The late-night talks, the small everyday moments, being present when they need me — that’s what I’m most proud of.

Professionally, I simply strive to care for people the way I would want my own family cared for. If I can serve with excellence and love, then I feel successful.

I’m also incredibly grateful for the mentors God has placed in my life, especially Dr. Jose Peña, who has poured into me and helped me grow. I know none of this is done alone — it takes faith, family, and community.

What do you want patients to feel when they visit your office?

More than anything, I want my patients to feel safe and at ease. Walking into a medical office can be overwhelming, and I never take that lightly. I hope they feel heard, respected, and cared for. I try to approach each patient with compassion and patience, remembering that every person carries their own fears and concerns. When I care for the elderly, I often think about how I would want my own grandparents treated — with dignity, gentleness, and clear communication.

My goal is to help make things feel understandable and manageable, even in complex or stressful situations. If a patient leaves feeling a little lighter, a little clearer, and confident that someone is advocating for them, then I feel I’ve done my job well.

Trust is something that’s earned, and I consider it a privilege when patients place that trust in me.

What do you like to do outside of work (hobbies or sports)?

Outside of my work in healthcare, I truly find joy in the simple things. I love to run — it’s one of my favorite ways to clear my mind and stay grounded. I’m very outdoors oriented and enjoy anything that gets me outside. I’m also an avid reader. Reading has always been important to me, and it’s something I’ve passed down to my children. My youngest daughter, who is just seven, is already on her second Harry Potter book — and I couldn’t be prouder. Literature holds a special place in my heart, especially since my dear friend, Michael Anthony Steele, is a published author and children’s book writer.

Faith is central to my life. I just started to host and lead a weekly Bible study in my home, creating a space where women and girls can grow spiritually, support one another, and work through Scripture and real-life topics like anxiety and personal growth.

On weekends, I value time to unwind and reset. Family time is especially important to me — Sundays are a tradition. We gather at my grandmother’s house, play bingo, and spend time with my family aunts and cousins. Those moments of laughter, connection, and togetherness are something I deeply cherish.

Above all, my greatest joy is being present for my three children. My 19-year-old son is studying Wildlife Management at Texas A&M, Kingsville, my 13-year-old daughter is ranked among the top swimmers in the nation with Olympic aspirations, and my youngest is thriving in private school. The late-night talks, showing up for their events, and simply being there for them matter more to me than any accomplishment.
