care, public health, home health, and disaster response. Beginning his career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in the late 1980s, he advanced to become a Registered Nurse, earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a specialization in public health. Throughout his career, Jeffrey developed deep expertise in cardiopulmonary care, particularly in ventilator management, working across high-acuity environments including cardiothoracic critical care, post-trauma units, and acute dialysis settings.

In addition to his clinical work, Jeffrey has made significant contributions as an educator and program developer. He authored and taught a Board of Registered Nursing–approved continuing education course on home ventilator care, helping address critical training gaps for nurses caring for complex patients. His passion for education extended into formal teaching roles, where he trained healthcare professionals in ventilator care, case management, and home health practices. His leadership experience also includes roles as Director of Nursing, Clinical Educator, and Quality Assurance specialist, where he focused on improving patient outcomes and strengthening clinical systems.

Jeffrey also served as a disaster nurse with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), responding to major emergencies including wildfires and international disaster deployments. His diverse career reflects a commitment to service, adaptability, and lifelong learning. Now retired from clinical practice, he is focused on writing and publishing, drawing from his extensive experience to educate and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

I wrote a CE program approved by the Board of Registered Nursing for 12 CEUs titled 'Home Care of the Respiratory Insufficient, Tracheotomy, & Mechanically Ventilated Patient' to certify nurses in home ventilator care. The reason I created this program was because there was such a shortage of nurses and LVNs, and we couldn't find any qualified staff, so I wrote the program, submitted it for approval, and started teaching it. I've been teaching it pretty much ever since, and now I've turned it into a book that I'm working on getting published. I also wrote a Brain Trauma Rehab Program for Excel Home Health, which we implemented successfully.

Q

What do you enjoy most about practicing medicine?

I've always liked the thrill and the adrenaline of working in critical care and high-stress environments. Throughout my career, I've been drawn to challenging situations where I can make a real difference, whether that's working in cardiothoracic critical care, post-trauma units, on disaster response teams, or even on fire lines during major California wildfires. I also find great satisfaction in education and helping to train the next generation of nurses. Writing and teaching my CE program on home ventilator care has been incredibly rewarding because it addresses a real need in the field and helps nurses gain the skills they need to provide excellent patient care. Now in retirement, I'm continuing that educational mission by working on my book and considering writing another one about my different experiences working on various units.
